This was one of my favourite books as a kid too! I wonder if my Mum still has a copy lying around...I'd love to read it again. I remember being so enchanted by it, but also that there was something a little unnerving about it too. Am I remembering correctly that there was another Lonely Doll book? Or was there just the one...I'll have to google it!
I remember this book too! Thanks so much for posting this - I just checked the link - what an interesting story ... more tales of the rich and strange...
there are others and there is definitely something unnerving about the book and authorread the autobiography it is so good
Dare Wright is the best. I loved and still love this book. The best combo of sweet/unsettling/vintage. Luv!
LOVE THIS BOOK. francesca you have the best taste
I love those books! My last boyfriend used to read them to me in bed. [Awwwww]I loved her biography: "The Secret Life of the Lonely Doll". It's totally fascinating, kind of similar to Gray Gardens in that there is a tight link between Dare and her mother, and they use their imaginations and limited resources to create beautiful faux realities that get blurry.
Don't take the biography as factual. Try going to Dare's website at www.darewright.com for the true story.
Persis - Yes, I've been to that site and read about the controversy about it. I understand that a lot of the biography by the reporter has been exaggerated to make it more shocking and such...but I still would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. :)
